When I first began teaching band 12 years ago, I wanted to have the greatest band ever with over 100 members. I was so fired up to begin teaching band. My first band had a whopping 8 members. By the end of the year that was the best band and the most fun I ever had. This is not my band featured, but here is something to show you that you don't need a lot to make a great band. Just make it hot with good tone quality and team chemistry.
If you have been a member of a competitive marching band, you are familiar with a judges sheet. The first catagory on any sheet is Tone Quality. This aspect usually earns a band the most points. Why? The tone of a band is that bands signature. The bands tone quality is the bands identity. When you meet someone for the first time you introduce yourself by saying, "Hi, my name is ____________ _________________ . This what the band says when they play the first note. Take a listen to the USC Trojan band. They have a unique tone quality that clearly identifies them as USC.
